Data Management Fundamentals

A beginner data fundamentals course for data analysts and data management professionals.
This course helps organisations equip their entry-level data professionals, such as data analysts, with a common understanding of how to work with and manage data.
Offered as a private, in-house course, material can be contextualised to your organisation’s particular needs.
What will your people learn?
- Basic data management principles: From the Data Management Body of Knowledge (DMBoK v2), and the relevance of applying an international standard to working with and on data.
- Understand data types and formats: A complete overview of common data types, both structured (tabular) and unstructured (such as images).
- Evaluate data quality issues: Data is never perfect. Students will gain an understanding of likely data quality issues and how to deal with them through a data governance lens.
- Prepare and clean data: Data cleaning can occupy up to 80% of data projects. Students will learn how to deal with data anomalies, outliers, missing data, duplicate data, categorisation, and data errors.
- Use foundational data analysis tools and techniques: Including probability/descriptive statistics that can be applied to understand data; inferential statistics to draw conclusions and make predictions; and machine learning (linear regression [in-depth] and logistic regression and decision trees [high level]).
- Select the right data analysis tools: Students spend half a day covering common tools for editing (dealing with large data files), spreadsheets (such as Microsoft Excel), programming languages (Python, R, SAS, SQL), visual tools (Power BI, RapidMiner, Tableau), database formats and data modelling tools.
